Author: Jacqueline Pirtle
Main Theme: Self–Help/Self-love, Non-fiction
Thesis: Jacqueline Pirtle is a holistic practitioner, simply meaning that she believes that holistic medicine is a form of healing that considers the whole person, body, mind, spirit, and emotions for optimal health and wellness. 365 Days of Happiness is her way of teaching you about everyday practices of mindful happiness in your everyday life. What Drew Me In: This was a fun one! Kelsey from sent me an email, asking if I was interested in reading Pirtle’s book. Kelsey works to market books for authors, getting copies into the hands of reviewers, and even land them things like book signings and speaking engagements! After agreeing to secure a physical copy of the book for an honest review in return, it was sent to me and Pirtle contacted me through my Instagram. The rest has been history, and I’m so glad to be working with two amazing women!

My Thoughts: I will admit, I am still chugging along in this book. When receiving this book, I figured it was the same like other books, an introduction, a few chapters about the author’s life and experiences, and how she translated it to the “holistic practicing”.

Boy, I was wrong!

Pirtle chose to write this book like you would in a diary or journal. Each “chapter” is a day, literally something for every day in a 365 day period! What I love about this book is that each day makes me “think”, she puts some kind of lesson in each one of her chapters. So I have decided to literally read only a few chapters a day, to give myself time to absorb what Pirtle is teaching and thinking of how it could apply to me.

One of my favorite chapters so far is actually Day 3 (right at the start, that’s a good sign for a good book!). Here is what she put down:

“The best cookie recipe makes delicious and enjoyable cookies! The best happiness recipe makes a delicious and enjoyable life.

  • Acknowledge everything and everyone without judgment
  • Accept everything and everyone
  • Respect everything and everyone
  • Appreciate everything and everyone
  • Thank everything and everyone
  • Love everything and everyone”

The reason this resonates with me so much is that this is something I have struggled with for a long time. My childhood and teenage years have left me a very negative person, always with a pessimistic view on life. Instead of focusing on MY happiness, I had to have a negative opinion on everyone else.

“Oh, you love Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus? You are so stupid, can’t you see how ridiculous their music is? Thank God I know what REAL music is… Of course, you have the brand new iPhone and a huge diesel truck, your mommy and daddy must have bought it all for you, must be nice for you. I’ll keep riding around in my 1992 Lumina… Oh, she’s a cheerleader, has a boyfriend, top of the class, and have a huge group of friends and their parents buy them the nicest clothes and crap? Whatever, she’s just a bitch anyway.” 

Before I continue on, I grew to love my little Lumina. She was a great car!

I was such a negative little black sheep growing up, I never realized the hatred buried so deep within me. What is so funny about this situation is that I firmly believed that I had the biggest heart around, and honestly speaking, I still really do believe that. I would be the first one to be someone’s friend, to sit with them at lunch, or be the shoulder to cry on. But you can’t be so full of hatred and call yourself a saint. Several years after high school graduation, I finally had my breakthrough. After bawling for a solid half hour about how unfair my life was, how I never had things that other’s had, and how their life was going so much better than mine, I cried out “Why don’t I have these things? I’m a better person than them! I deserve this more!” To say the least, it wasn’t a good night.

But guess what?! I have great things! And Pirtle’s lesson here can be applied!

  • Acknowledge that I need to stop passing judgment on others
  • Accept the life I have, the mistakes I have made, and the future I can make
  • RESPECT, for myself and other’s
  • Appreciate what I have, from the warm bed I share with my amazing husband and blanket stealing dog, to the stocked kitchen, and my Target obsessed clothes on my back
  • Thank myself for the hard work I have done, the life experiences that taught me who I want to be, and the support group I have surrounding me
  • Love myself, my flaws, my perks, and my past, present, and future self.

Life doesn’t have to be miserable after all. I will never forget the bad times, the crippling anxiety from math class, or the bullies that put me down for their own amusement. The worry from home, feeling the weight on my shoulders. Seeing two little sets of eyes watching my every move, learning from their big sister and depending on her for almost everything. I made mistakes, I didn’t put enough care in a lot of situations. But I can better myself, I can make my life better.

Jacqueline, I hope you know that your words have meaning to them. ♡

Would I recommend this book?: Yes, give this book a try. I have to admit, I have rarely heard the term “holistic medicine” in my life. I am sure there is SOOO much more to it than what my review knows of. But if you need peace within your mind, you are at your wit’s end, you feel like giving up… what is there to lose? Snag a copy!
